The Vidos unveil a music video for “Boomshackalacka”

When you first hear The Vidos’ brand new single “Boomshackalacka,” it’s clear just how much fun these guys have making music together. Read on to learn how the Vancouver trio made it through the pandemic stronger than ever before, what advice they’d give their younger selves, and much more.

Your new single “Boomshackalacka” is an instant earworm…in the best way possible. With the three-year gap in single releases, did you approach this song any differently than your previous singles?

For sure, at the time this song came about, we’d definitely reached a creative impasse and hadn’t really written anything for over a year. It might not sound like it, but the break from creating together was actually really nice and totally necessary because it allowed all three of us to sit back and absorb other music and grow individually so we could come back and do nothing but throw curveballs at each other. This song was my opening pitch to the guys, and they were like, “yeah, this is cool. Go off queen”.

From what I’ve seen on your socials, you just celebrated 11 years together?! Congrats! If you could give the early-day band advice from your current selves, what would it be?

Hell yeah, thank you!

This is a great question. I’ve actually been thinking about that a lot lately. I think I’d tell us to write more about the experience of being kids and all the stuff that goes on around that time when you’re in high school — when you’re doing things like riding your bike to get screamers at the corner store, or smoking weed for the first time behind the hockey rink and then pretending not to be high in front of your dad. It’s a prime opportunity to narrate that stuff in real-time, but oftentimes you end up trying way too hard to write adulty-sounding shit without having a clue what you’re talking about. We had maybe a few songs that captured the moment, but I think we could’ve leaned into it a bit more instead of desperately wishing to be tortured souls and stuff. So I’d tell us that, and then I’d say something like, hey, not every song needs a guitar solo, let alone two. And put that goddamn cigarette out!

Can you tell our readers more about your upcoming album?

The songs came together during the pandemic when we were all quarantined together in our Toronto apartment. We were in the ZONE, man. We ended up writing 25 or so, which isn’t a super crazy amount but, by our standards, is a Picasso level of prolificacy. We whittled it down to our top 10 and then rehearsed those ten songs over and over again for, I wanna say, like seven or eight months. We wanted to kinda mimic being on the road and getting the songs to feel lived-in, as they do when you’re on tour — Nolan’s trying shots in different places, I’m swapping out lyrics, and, of course, we’re getting the band tighter than Kirk’s t-shirt. We recorded the whole thing in album sequence last summer in our producer Danny’s garage (that’s the best way to avoid the heat wave, by the way — in an air-conditioned studio drinkin’ caesars and playing music for ten hours a day). We are very, very proud of this record and can’t wait for y’all to hear it.

Considering what everyone went through over the past 2.5 years, how did you, as a band, stay motivated to continue creating and looking ahead to returning to normal?

Man, we were just lucky to have this record to focus on. We kept each other sane for once, which was a nice change of pace. Plus, we had our therapy cat Benny (of “And the Jets” fame), who is still suffering a tremendous amount of post-traumatic stress from all the ambient mental illness she unwittingly absorbed from us in those years.

What are your plans for the next few months?

I think we’re just going to enjoy rolling out this new record, go see some shows, and keep on writing and throwing crazy ideas around. We’re putting together a brand new live set right now that’s also really nothing like we’ve ever done before, and that’s really exciting. Our boys in Chase the Bear are always asking us when we’re gonna play a show, haha. Soon, I swear!
