Ottawa’s Lynne Hanson unveiled her latest album, Ice Cream in November, back in April.
Often called Canada’s Queen of Americana, Lynne is no stranger to the Canadian music scene with nine studio albums. Her newest, Ice Cream in November, features twelve tracks, including the two singles, “Hip Like Cohen” and “Hundred Mile Wind.”
It’s always a challenge to choose two songs from a release, especially when the release is bursting with great tracks. After a few listen-throughs, I have to say the two stand-out tracks are “Shadowland” and “One of Those Days.”
“Shadowland” starts the album with a bang, with Lynne’s high-energy, blues-infused sound. I love the difference in Lynne’s vocals from song to song, but even without this one track. At times, she’s chanting, then she’s crooning, and then you add in the different instruments and sound effects throughout, and you have a purely unique experience within a song.
“One of Those Days” shows a slightly less intense side of Lynne’s music, falling more on the folk side of things, with a mellow beat and vocals to match. Throughout the song, Lynne sings of moments throughout the day when it’s just not going her way. That’s something we all know about. Through the verses, we hear of burnt toast, being replaced by a bot at work, and a partner cheating. Just as we’re feeling down and out, the chorus rushes in, “I know you think I’m crazy, I know what you’re going to say, That it’s not the end of the world, That it’s just one of those days.” I love how the song switches from a mainly negative standpoint to an ode to stay positive with the lyrics, “Have a little faith, Count to ten, Gotta be a happy ending, To this movie I’m in.”
It’s easy to see why Lynne has had so many releases and also why she’s known as the Queen of Americana, she’s unstoppable!
