Hazen Halls shares his new single, “When Boat Painting Becomes a Rescue Mission”

The lead single from Hazen Halls’ (the pseudonym for award-winning Prince Edward Island writer and musician Rick Sparkes’ latest recording project) is the song “When Boat Painting Becomes a Rescue Mission” from his upcoming album Our Fires Fade to Candles Vol. 1.

The track features acclaimed Canadian singer/songwriter Nathan Wiley on bass, electric piano, and lap steel; Rick Sparkes on acoustic and electric guitars and lead vocals; Carrie MacLellan on trumpet and backing vocals; Nick LeBlanc (from New Brunswick’s Jamie Comeau & the Crooked Teeth) on the outro electric piano; and album engineer and co-producer Brent Chaisson on drums.

Review

Clocking in at 3 minutes and 46 seconds, Hazen Halls’ single, “When Boat Painting Becomes a Rescue Mission,” tells a story of a grandfather recounting his wartime experiences to his grandchild. The single drops as the first release from the upcoming ten-track album, due out in late Fall 2022.

The backing instruments give off an almost eerie vibe, which, combined with Rick’s slow and steady vocals and emotional storytelling, produce a full-bodied track. As the lead single, “When Boat Painting Becomes a Rescue Mission,” becomes a precursor of what’s to come from the upcoming album, and honestly, it leaves me wanting more.

Storytelling is a big part of what I like about music. The lyrics always pull me in, so knowing that Haven Halls’ tracks are pulled from poetry only attracts me even more. So join me when I say, “Let’s hear some more!”
