After a little off-festival detour to catch Starset at the Corona Theater, we returned to the Montreal Jazz Festival for Day 4! We started our evening at a packed Club Soda to catch Swedish singer-songwriter LÉON. It had been a couple years since the singer last visited Montreal, and she didn’t fail to mention how happy she was to be back. She was quick to have the crowd in the palm of her hand with her incredible vocals and bubbly stage presence!
Next, we headed to the Gesù for what promised to be a very special performance. A bit before 11pm, Montreal’s very own Hubert Lenoir emerged on stage, in a suit and hat, accompanied by a pianist and saxophone player. For the next 90 minutes, Hubert delivered a smooth and jazzy performance, extremely paired down from the crazy performances we’re used to seeing him do (his last set at Les Francos, for example). No moshpits, crowdsurfing or guitar smashing, but a winning bet for Hubert as the minimalist performance let his voice truly shine, and gave him the opportunity to explore outside his repertoire, for example with a beautiful cover of Si on s’y mettait by Jean-Pierre Ferland.
Montreal Jazz Festival is taking place downtown from June 30th to July 9th 2022. For tickets and more information, visit montrealjazzfest.com.
