Montreal Jazz Festival is back and in full swing! On the eve of the Canaday Day long weekend, we headed to the Quartier des Spectacles, to find it buzzing with people just like old times! We started our evening at MTelus, with Alicia Creti opening the night. The Montreal-born singer revealed that it was actually her first show in her hometown, and she wowed the audience with her incredible voice, which reminds us of the dearly-missed Amy Whinehouse.
As the crowd became more and more excited for Alicia Moffet, we got some adorable entertainment to pass the time as her golden retriever Willow roamed the stage, stealing the show and hearts of the venue! Finally, around 9pm, Alicia emerged on stage in front of a sold-out audience. Seeing such a large crowd singing along to her songs brought some tears to her eyes, as she waved at her baby watching the show from the VIP balcony.
Then, we headed to the TD stage for the opening outdoor show, Australian multi-instrumentalist Tash Sultana. While we already knew that they are insanely popular, we were flabbergasted by the size of the crowd, as 40,000 people flooded the Place des Festivals! Acting as a one-person band and pulling out so many different instruments for most of the show, Tash provided a stellar performance. The bar is set very high for the next shows at the TD stage!
Finally, we managed to work our way out of the crowd and head to the new Montreal TD Club, a fun and intimate outdoor stage. We closed the night with Hologramme, the brainchild of Montreal producer Clément Leduc. Their dreamy electro music was the perfect way to dance the night away under the stars, making Day 1 an epic start to the festival!
Montreal Jazz Festival is taking place downtown from June 30th to July 9th 2022. For tickets and more information, visit montrealjazzfest.com.
