Originally from Nova Scotia, now based in Toronto, Mike Legere has shared his new single, “Dawson City,” the first song from his forthcoming sophomore album Memory Forming Clouds, which is set for release in Fall 2022.
It’s an evocative, passionate track demonstrating Legere’s incredible range and inherent ability to connect with his audience by sharing his most vulnerable moments.
When asked about the inspiration behind Dawson City, Legere said,
“Dawson City is the first single from my upcoming record Memory Forming Clouds. I wrote and recorded most of it in Fox Harbour, Nova Scotia, where I set up a temporary studio and lived for a month in the wake of my life in Toronto collapsing. A personal loss had kickstarted a dark year; I was at the end of a ten year relationship and the studio I worked at was destroyed in a flood. I wrote Dawson City about the unexpected feeling of needing to come home, just as uncertain as when you left.”
The video accompanying the release accentuates the sentimentality of the track with layered, fragmented frames of footage taken from the original writing and recording sessions for Memory Forming Clouds. These layers demonstrate the often chaotic, clouded melancholy of trying to make sense of grief – loss of relationships, loss of mentors, and not achieving what you had set out to. The video closes with Legere coming into a clear view with the realization that he has gained more than he has lost by putting himself out there and trying.
I have always been a fan of folk-rock, as it possesses the heavier beat of a rock track, with the softness and emotion that folk music often evokes. “Dawson City” is no different; with a poppish beat, the passion and emotion flow through the lyrics flawlessly.
