Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey! My name is Ken Waters. I am a Cote-Saulteaux First Nation Music Producer, Songwriter, and Music Artist residing in Vancouver, Canada. I started producing music at the age of 15 and fell in love with the process after a couple of keystrokes on my midi keyboard.
After high school, I wanted to learn more about the industry and improve my skills, which led me to study Audio Engineering, Music Production, and DJ Arts at Trebas Institute. Creatively I started with electronic dance music and have branched out to many other genres and styles throughout my career. I am currently exploring the genres of pop, chill, deep house, tropical house, and lofi.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
“Shimmy” is the collaboration between myself and Vancouver Singer-Songwriter Victoria Groff. It all started when I heard her music, and was inspired by her singing. Instantly I could envision her vocals over a lofi/chill beat and had to make it a reality.
That night I got to work, and the next day I sent her an email with the instrumental and an introduction. Once Victoria heard the piece her mind quickly took her back to the first few years post-college, a wonderland time where she travelled solo, fell in love in different countries, and felt the idea of possibility everywhere she went. Flipping through poems and lyrics written during this time, Victoria found exactly what she was looking for; a page of lyrics written years ago about a new city, a handsome man, and a potential one-night stand. Capturing the rush of love and excitement when meeting a new potential love interest, “Shimmy” is a chill summer single bursting with innuendoes of turning one night full of lust, into maybe something more.
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
I find inspiration in multiple different ways, one of these is by hearing single instruments within the music I am listening to. If I hear a bass guitar, piano, synth, percussion, drums, or sound effect that grabs my attention and lights up emotion, it instantly gets me in the studio wanting to create something similar. When it comes to the songwriting and melody writing portion of things, I tend to start by freestyle singing to an instrumental I have created. Once I find a subject or idea I like, I’ll start building the story from there, usually building off of the chorus.
Do you have any upcoming shows or festivals you’d like to tell us about?
I do not currently have any shows planned. In the future, I am planning on creating a great DJ set full of originals, remixes, interludes, and exciting live versions of already released singles.
What’s your goal for 2022?
I like to start off my yearly goals by working on ways to improve my physical, mental, and spiritual health. I find that is key to me accomplishing other goals I have during the year. To name a few of this year’s musical goals, I plan to release a few more vocal single collaborations, release a lofi/chill instrumental album, and create more multi-genre music to add to my royalty-free music library that I have created for content creators.
