TD Halifax Jazz Festival will be celebrating its 36th annual event this July 13th-17th, and they have announced a slew of amazing acts.
HJF is excited to welcome artists and festival goers back to the Halifax Waterfront featuring a new festival stage layout in the Foundation Lot and the return of community stages across the HRM.
Helping to kick off opening night on Wed, July 13, Polaris Prize-nominated, Prism Prize-winning artist, AQUAKULTRE will set the stage for TANK AND THE BANGAS. Wed, July 14 will see HALF MOON RUN & ANDY SHAUF. On Fri, July 15 Canadian folk-band favourites THE WEATHER STATION will be supporting Grammy-nominated indie artist, PERFUME GENIUS. A welcome return to the HJF stage on Sat, July 16 is the incomparable, Juno-award-winning singer-songwriter MOLLY JOHNSON joined by recent Grammy-winner ALEX CUBA. Nova Scotia powerhouse, REENY SMITH, will kick off the closing night of HJF on Sun, July 17 with a FREE performance before passing the stage over to THE MELLOTONES who will be joined by ADAM BALDWIN plus other surprise guests to celebrate the band’s 25th year together.
As a pre-festival show to get in the spirit of #HJF2022, Upstream Music Association Presents bassist Michael Formanek Drome Trio on Tues, July 12 at St. Matthew’s United Church. The concert will consist of pieces from his Palindrome Series #1, and Palindrome Series #2 from 2020. These pieces started as graphic scores that are played forwards then backward creating the palindrome.
In addition to the TD Main Stage acts being announced, HJF is honored to be presenting A Tribute to Jerry Granelli. The work and energy that Jerry Granelli put behind the TD Halifax Jazz Festival and the Creative Music Workshop has left an indelible mark on the music community. Jerry’s work and dedication have fostered vibrant music and improvising arts community in Halifax and will continue to do so for years to come. The evening of music will be led by Jerry’s son, bassist J. Granelli. Guests will include faculty from the CMW and many of Jerry’s longtime collaborators, including vocalist Jay Clayton, pianist Jamie Saft, saxophonist Dani Oore, and Alan Syliboy along with many more. As part of the St. Matt’s Church Series, this tribute will take place Fri, July 16 with a portion of each ticket sale going toward the Jerry Granelli Legacy Fund.
