Five Questions With Sonia Deleo

Calgary, AB-based singer-songwriter, Sonia Deleo is set to release her full-length album, Love Notes to the Monsters in September 2022. In advance of the release, she has unveiled the first single from the album, “Do It All”.

“Do It All” is a declaration; a little angry, a little triumphant. We are constantly inundated by societal messaging about who to be. We are stifled, boxed in, and made to believe our true whacky selves aren’t welcome. This song says “no”. We will not try to win them all, we will not sacrifice our truth in favour of fitting in, and we will be who we want to be!

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m a folk/rock singer-songwriter, actor, and mama, based in Calgary, AB.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

This single, DO IT ALL, is both defiant and triumphant; a declaration that we will no longer adhere to society’s contradictory expectations of us. Instead, we wonder how beautiful the world would be if more of us were being authentic and not forcing ourselves into limiting boxes. This track was co-written by myself and Calgary bassist & songwriter, Lisa Jacobs. It’s a little folk, a little rock.

When it comes to the global pandemic, how are you keeping yourself out in the public eye while not being able to perform?

I’ve managed to play quite a lot, around Alberta especially, so I feel very lucky. But it’s definitely been tough to maintain strong momentum. I am always working on my social media presence, collaborating, and finding new ways to connect with listeners. For eg. during the pandemic, I asked followers to submit lyrics they wanted to see in a song and then started writing little mini songs for people. I’m all about spreading the music love.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so if you were able to work with ONE fellow Canadian artist, alive or dead, who would you choose?

Hands down, Hawksley Workman. He’s been a fave since I first saw him play when I was 19. I think we could write a rad song together, and I’d love to tour with him one day!

What’s your goal for 2022?

My main goal is to keep having fun with all of this. I hope the new album, Love Notes to the Monsters (September 2022), is heard on a grander scale than anything I’ve released yet, and I hope to tour next spring and festival season, but ultimately I want to enjoy the process. It’s important not to get too wrapped up in an elusive destination…however, I’m also driven af and know what I want…so at times, it’s hard to maintain that balance!
