Five Questions With Katana

Born in Hong Kong, based in Vancouver, BC, electro/ alternative/ art-pop singer-songwriter and producer, Katana has unveiled her new single, “Diary Entry”.

The edgy R&B tinged track is an authentic offering, featuring words taken straight from Katana’s own diary.

Katana on the meaning behind the track:

“Have you ever met somebody that is so out of everything you thought was possible, that blew you out of the water? Ever had your heart broken by someone you briefly met, barely knew? This is that story for me. The words in the song are ripped right out of a page that I wrote in my diary. Nothing fancy. No big words. Just a reflection piece on my life at the time and on this beautiful person I was so lucky to meet. And maybe this song is also just a long way of saying: “Hey man, if you’re listening to this, give me a call lol”

In “Diary Entry”, Katana shares a glimpse of the passion and vulnerability we can expect on her upcoming EP. Katana’s bona fide confessional songwriting stands out from the crowd as she honestly shares her own self-discovery with the listener.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

A Hong Kong-born, singer-songwriter, newbie producer Vancouverite. I take inspiration from a variety of genres of music, artists, and dance. I just like to make music that I, myself, love to listen to and hope that someone out there connects with it too. I don’t think it should be any more complicated than that.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

It is a fun, groovy, and almost spoken-word like at times little piece of dialogue. I started out making the beat just for fun, not really knowing what it would be used for. At the time, the events that the song is about just happened not too long ago. Meeting someone new and being so struck by them, only to end up parting ways with the potential connection. The wounds were still fresh as you can say. So I thought why not make it a song about that and use a page from my diary for the lyrics? I was skeptical that I could turn it into something cool but as soon I came up with the hook, I knew this song had to be made. I want to take a moment to extend my gratitude to Josh Eastman, my producer. He has been wonderful and he has played a major part in this song and the ones that follow!

When it comes to the global pandemic, how are you keeping yourself out in the public eye while not being able to perform?

I had just been keeping my head down and working on my craft and building a catalogue. I did not fear that I wasn’t getting in front of the public eye and getting myself seen. I just knew I had to focus on making these tracks and having something meaningful to share once we’re allowed to. The good news is I feel prepared and shows are being booked now!

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so if you were able to work with ONE fellow Canadian artist, alive or dead, who would you choose?

Leonard Cohen! I imagine singing a gentle, soft ballad with him. That would be the most beautiful thing.

What’s your goal for 2022?

My goal for the rest of 2022 is to release my first EP around summertime. Collaborating with local artists as well as a few Hong Kong ones. Keep the music going! SInce live shows are back, I’m planning to play a number of shows in the city as well! By the end of the year, a new album/era will be in the works.
