Five Questions With IDMAN

Raised in Toronto, based in Los Angeles, rising pop R&B singer, IDMAN unveiled their single, “Good Life” along with a video to accompany the release last month.

On top of that, she was one of this year’s 5 Black Canadian Music Awards (BCMA) winners, which were created to recognize and celebrate the artistic merit demonstrated by Black music creators of any genre. Hundreds of applications from artists across Canada covering a wide variety of musical genres were submitted for consideration, and winners were selected by a jury and advisory council of prominent Black artists and industry leaders.

IDMAN creates a unique sound of their own, with sultry R&B vocals accompanied by electrifying pop production and hard-hitting beats.

Named by Dazed as one of “2021’s Next Gen of Pop”, IDMAN has already gained massive support for her first two singles, “Down for It” and “Polytics”, amassing over 2 million streams and counting.

Check out the video for “Good Life” below, and find out more about IDMAN via our Five Questions With segment.

Salaams 🤎 I’m idman (she/they pronouns)

I’m a sack of meat and bones on this floating rock who feels warm when other sacks of meat listen to the sounds that I write/make with my friends.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

“Good Life” is my first real breakup/relationship-centered release. I went through my first real heartbreak (I know 😭) and found myself feeling angry and bitter and down-bad so, real catharsis came through the process of creating this song. Hoping and also not hoping that people are related and resonating with the human parts of this song. I love it a lot.

What can fans expect from one of your live shows and do you have any upcoming performances?

I think they can expect a live set that feels like it was created by someone who loves watching live sets. I hope they can expect honesty and connection. I definitely do but I’m not sure I’m allowed to share what yet. But yes – I’m super pumped about it!

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so if you were able to work with ONE fellow Canadian artist, who would you choose?

KAYTRANADA golly gee…

How does it feel to be one of this year’s winners of the SiriusXM Black Canadian Music Awards?

It’s an incredible honor. My music and the art I make cannot be separate from the lens I see the world through. My music and art is made specifically with Black people, even more specifically black women and queer/trans folks, in mind so to be recognized alongside such brilliant talent for this specific honor, this early on in our journey feels unbelievable. It honestly blows my mind still.

What’s your biggest goal for 2022?

To do the things that the me who is currently writing these words can’t even begin to imagine.
