Listen to “Brand New” below, and find out more about Thandi Marie via our mini-interview.

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m Thandi Marie, a Malawian-born R&B artist based in Newfoundland, Canada. I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember. I’ve always admired artists specifically R&B artists and what they could do with their voices and lyrics. Growing up, pursuing music didn’t seem like a possibility for me. Back then it seemed like an unrealistic dream so I kept it as a hobby. In my free time when I wasn’t in school or hanging out with friends and family, I practiced singing. I would sing along to Adele, Beyonce, Rihanna, and Emeli Sande to try and hit the same notes as them and to improve my voice. It wasn’t until about two years ago that I decided to give music a try and let my voice be heard.

You have just released your debut single, “Brand New”, what can you tell us about the background of the song?

For me, ‘Brand New’ represents entering a new stage in life. I wrote the lyrics in an open and honest way. Not only are the soulful lyrics speaking to a love interest, but they are also targeted towards my, less secure self. This is portrayed in the slow but steady evolution of the first verse to the last. I believe it creates a soothing yet heartfelt listening experience.

Has growing up in various countries throughout your life (South Africa, Canada, Spain, and The UAE) inspired your music? If so, how?

It has really given me a whole different perspective that I never had before I started moving around. It is a privilege that I’m lucky to have. Having met so many different people and experienced so many different cultures has equipped me with so many stories to tell.

If you were able to work with any Canadian artist, who would you choose?

That’s a hard question because there’s so much talent here in Canada. There are so many artists I admire such as The Weeknd, Jessie Reyez and Amaal. But If I had to choose one I’d say Savannah Re. She has such a beautiful voice. With every song she sings, you believe every word. I really hope to work with her one day.

What else can we expect from you in 2022?

You can expect a lot more amazing music. This is only the beginning for me. There are so many stories I want to tell. So many different sounds I want to experiment with. And so many creatives in the industry I want to work with. I just hope you stick around for the journey.
