Preparations for the 2022 Polaris Music Prize are underway with the announcement of key dates for the Polaris Music Prize Event Season.
This year’s Polaris Music Prize will kick-off with the reveal of Prize’s 40 album Long List on June 14, followed by the 10 album Short List on July 14. And, for the first time since 2019, this year’s winning album will be announced September 19 at The Polaris Music Prize Gala, to be held at the Carlu in Toronto, Ontario. Finally, following the announcement of the Polaris Music Prize, two new Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize-winning albums on Friday, October 21.
Since 2006, Polaris Music Prize has been awarding $50,000 to the artist that creates the Canadian Album of the Year, as judged by an independent jury of music journalists based solely on artistic merit and without consideration of genre or record sales. Meanwhile, established in 2015, the Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize has been honouring meritorious Canadian albums that pre-date the Polaris Music Prize. Past winners of the Polaris Music Prize include Backxwash, Haviah Mighty, Jeremy Dutcher, Lido Pimienta, Kaytranada, and Buffy Sainte-Marie; while classic albums by Sloan, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Broken Social Scene have all been honoured by the Slaight Family Polaris Heritage Prize.
