Interview – Osasioo

Born in Nigeria, based in Edmonton, Alberta, independent music artist, Osasioo (aka Osadebamwen (Osas) Igbinosun) spends his days working as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, helping in the detection and treatment of different cancers. When he is not at the hospital, he is either creating music, playing soccer, working out, or cooking his favourite recipes from Chef Gordon Ramsay!

Osasioo recently released his 4-track EP, Lovetales & Pancakes, and you’re going to want to check it out!

Osasioo shares how he named the release,

“In the past, my Saturday morning routine involved me making pancakes whilst listening to my favourite love songs. These moments of solitude kickstarted my songwriting, and it was incredibly enriching for my well-being- it just seemed like the perfect way to start my day. When the songs on the EP were recorded, I decided to name it “Lovetales & Pancakes” because I wanted to honour those moments of solitude that inspired my songwriting.”

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Osadebamwen (Osas) Igbinosun and my stage name is “Osasioo”. I am a singer/songwriter based in Edmonton, Alberta. I was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and moved to Edmonton at the age of 15 to begin my undergraduate degree at MacEwan University. Upon arriving in Canada, I joined my local church’s worship team as an acoustic guitarist/singer. This event triggered my love for songwriting, guitar-playing, and all-around creation of music. My musical influences include the likes of Craig David, Joe, Vianney, and Aloe Blacc. My debut single “Into you” was released on November 18, 2021, and this was followed by the release of an EP “Lovetales & Pancakes” on January 14, 2021.

You have recently unveiled your EP, Lovetales & Pancakes, what can you tell us about the release?

Lovetales & Pancakes tells love stories in various forms and is captivating enough to engage listeners who have a wide array of musical preferences and energy but still share one thing in common- the love for immaculate music.

For example,
“Into you” incorporates modern tropical house sounds to get the listeners dancing and in their feelings;
“Love you right” hits you with nostalgia and reminds you of what sweet R&B music sounds like;
“Two hearts” warms your soul and takes you on a journey of imperfect love;
“Easy” tells the story of a guy who can’t believe how lucky he is to be with someone who makes loving so easy.

The EP features four tracks, if you were to only suggest ONE for a new listener, which would you choose, and why?

I would choose “Two Hearts”. This track was designed to take listeners on a journey of the singer’s affection towards his partner. In this song, he isn’t quite sure that he’s in love yet, but he knows that if he were to fall in love, it’ll definitely be with her. The bridge of the song describes the challenges and flaws of the relationship. However, the ending of the song re-visits the singer’s main stance: although they have their challenges, if he were to fall in love, it would be with her…because love simply isn’t perfect.

You’ve also released a video for “Love You Right”, what was your favourite part of the video shoot?

My favourite part of the video was the outdoor scene in the dark. It was a cold, rainy day in Vancouver and I was shivering throughout the outdoor shoot. I remember singing along to the song and my lips were so cold, they wouldn’t move. The director, cinematographer, and production manager all had a great time exchanging banter about my singing in the cold. Although I didn’t enjoy the cool temperature, it provided some unplanned excitement and an unforgettable experience.

What’s next for you in 2022?

2022 is going to be an exciting year filled with lots of music creation and making amazing connections.

I am going to be recording more tracks with music videos for the future release of an album. I will be working on that project with my good friend who is also a composer/writer and my manager. Wedding season is going to be upon us as well, and I’ll be looking forward to being a part of such special moments.
