Toronto, ON-based singer-songwriter, Teagan Jonhston, formerly known as Little Coyote has released her first single from her upcoming full-length album. The single, “Blue Monday”, a dark-pop offering is an introspective and emotional piano-ballad, driven by a delicately wistful vocal line and haunting instrumentation.
“Blue Monday details the events leading up to a breakup. It is a deeply personal song that explores drug addiction, the loss of a partner and the feeling of begging someone to stay at the cost of yourself.” Teagan shares the meaning behind the track.
“The lyric “Cut into me like a Blue Monday midnight driver” refers to a carjacking that happened near my apartment while I was going through this breakup. The story of the car jacking as it was told to me was that on Blue Monday a car jacker stabbed someone and took their vehicle. After hearing the story I imagined the victim of the carjacking victim sympathizing with the carjackers’ need to “just get away” as I was with my partners’ need to leave our relationship.” Teagan adds.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Teagan Johnston, I am an artist currently based in Toronto ON.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I tend to write about my personal experiences, often experiences that hurt my heart. I grew up playing classical piano so that is almost always what I write music on and the base instrument in most of my music.
How have you been keeping creative during the pandemic?
I’ve been enjoying exploring new corners of creativity and redefining what creativity means to me during the pandemic. With that exploration I’ve been most enjoying writing, not musically but for articles and creative writing.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
I would say the newest single Blue Monday! It’s a song that I feel best encapsulates what I feel is “my” sound.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Some of my favorites right now are Skye Wallace and Backxwash! I have also really been enjoying the new The Weekend record Dawn FM.
