Interview – Marshall Potts

British Columbia’s own, Marshall Potts has released his new arena-worthy country rock single, “Free and Easy”.

The title track from the Canadian artist’s third and forthcoming album, Free and Easy — set to land Summer 2021 via Sony/Orchard — “Free and Easy” is the latest powerful example of Potts’ mission to deliver a universal message of positivity and optimism through music.

While the song’s title may evoke a laid-back aural expectation, “Free and Easy” is a stadium-sized anthem, showcasing Potts’ soaring, full throttle voice that could easily rival any top rock idol’s.

If you need to know how I’m feeling
Let’s share a bottle and some of your time
Cause I need to feel free and easy
Before I’m gonna let you in my mind

From this opening invitation to the sky punching chorus and rollicking outro, “Free and Easy” showcases Potts’ journey of self-discovery and personal evolution in a big, bold way. It’s an attention-holding, larger-than-life declaration much like the towering billboard that recently introduced Potts to Music City.

Self-reflection and personal growth are central themes throughout the British Columbia-based singer/songwriter’s upcoming record.

“The album collectively tells the story of my own spiritual journey and inner awakening,” Potts explains. “Free and Easy invites the listener to join me on this journey.”

Potts says “Free and Easy” sets the stage for his entire new album. It “foreshadows the positive outcome we can all expect when we take the time to learn about ourselves, seek our own truths, heal our old scars and reemerge standing our ground in our own power. The hero story we are all meant to walk and the gratitude that leads our lives as a result.”

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi, I’m Marshall Potts a singer/songwriter from Kamloops B.C. where I live on 160 acres near what many, including the Dalai Lama, call the center of the universe. I write songs that crossover a few genres like Americana, Country Rock, and Rock formats. I hope my music will send out a universal message of positivity and optimism. Encouraging my listeners to move beyond your past, to take back your power, embrace the moment and live in the here and now.

Tell us about the recording process behind “Free and Easy”?

We recorded Free And Easy at Hipposonic Studios in Vancouver, BC (formerly Little Mountain Sound location) where we had the privilege to work with John Webster, our producer. We really loved soaking up the vibe and long history of the room and all those amazing albums and performers that have previously recorded there. We did final overdubs at Chez Jean Studios also in Vancouver, BC, and even a few from my studio here at our ranch. This song really pushed my voice and I am grateful for my awesome band and the amazing talent of Kenny Greer (Tom Cochrane, Gowan) who played steel guitar on this. and a few other tracks on the new album which is to follow Free And Easy release to radio and online.

What was the highlight of 2020?

2020 like the rest of us was a real challenge but had some hidden highlights.
Unfortunately plans to perform at home and places like Sweden, France, and Milwaukee got postponed. It led to free time to finish a new album produced by John Webster, an amazing musician and talented producer who has worked with a long list of A-list recording artists. The team released my single That’s How It Starts in March 2020 and it received over 30 adds before we changed focus onto the new album due to you know what 🙂 All in all, in retrospect it was a blessing in disguise at least as it related to the creation of new music and to this date the most exciting album I have had the privilege of being a part of:)

What do you hope to accomplish in your career in 2021?

We have started the year with a bang having secured major Label distribution through Sony Music/The Orchard when we signed with Brandy Records/MC1 Nashville, received the cover of Cash Box Magazine, we were awarded Factor Grant Canada’s JSR Grant which was an amazing feeling and will likely open so many more doors for us this year and got to be apart of Heal The Earth International’s Music Special this past Earth Day Narrated by Canada’s own Tom Jackson with awesome artists like Gowan, Alan Frew (Glass Tiger) Tommy James and many more. We hope our radio release of Free And Easy worldwide will land us on the charts and look forward to going out and performing in late summer and returning to places like Sweden this September. I really want to go out and reconnect with people all over again with a new appreciation for all this amazing world has to offer!! I feel like it’s now more a mission than a career. I guess sometimes the answer is both:)

Is there anyone out there you’d like to collaborate or open/close a concert with in the future?

I would love to work with so many here are a few off the top of my head:) Keith Urban, Chris Stapleton, Tom Cochrane, Luke Combs, Bryan Adams, Shania Twain
