Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Of course! I’m Sophia Fracassi, I’m seventeen, and I’m a singer/songwriter from a small town called Everett in Ontario.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. It’s always been a big part of my life, and everything I write is very personal. I like to create music from a place of direct intimacy – I guess I can’t help but spill my secrets.
Sonically, I like to blend more current sounds with the classics we all love to hear. I write almost all of my music sitting at a slightly out of tune piano in my family home, so everything is usually keys-based. My songs typically begin with an idea or even an emotion that I build upon. Sometimes they start with a lyric, sometimes a melody… Sometimes both at once!
How have you been staying creative during the pandemic?
I’ve actually been staying VERY creative throughout these wild times! I just released my first single ever, Wish I Never Met You, which is extremely exciting. It’s been a long time coming, so it feels really good to finally get to share that song with the world. I have also been working on my next single, “Somebody”, which will drop this summer! Aside from that, I’ve just been writing constantly – which I would be doing no matter what, but the pandemic certainly frees up some time! Even though the world has changed as we know it, and my usual life has stopped in a lot of ways, there is still plenty to draw from for inspiration. We are living through history here, I think that alone is songwriting material!
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
My new single – Wish I Never Met You! Considering that it’s my first release, that’s the obvious choice. However – I do feel that the song encapsulates who I am as an artist, and gives listeners a glimpse into my little corner of the music world. Keep your eyes and ears peeled though… more music on the way that I am insanely excited to share!
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/artists?
There are TONS, Canada is truly home to so many incredible artists.
My all-time favourite Canadian musician will always and forever be, Joni Mitchell. She has been SUCH an inspiration to me in every way and has paved the way for so many female singer-songwriters. As far as more contemporary artists go, I absolutely love Mac DeMarco – he’s got incredible songwriting, and Alessia Cara is just a total girl crush. So cool, so wildly talented.
