Five Questions With Alicia Toner

PEI-based Alicia Toner has released her brand new single, “Have It All”.

Her unique take on Americana music (infusing it with pop, rock, and neo-roots) sets her apart and makes people take notice.  Her new single, “Have It All” is no exception. A soaring tune, that showcases her vocal prowess, and not to mention songwriting skills – the new single is a powerful anthem for those finding their voice.

“This song is for anyone who can’t use their voice,” says Toner, “whether it’s out of fear or because the system has told you to be quiet, this is for you.”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey there. I’m Alicia Toner, a singer/songwriter living on Prince Edward Island. I was born and raised in Fredericton, NB but have lived all over this country acting in plays and playing violin in shows. Lately, I’ve been making music at home in Charlottetown while my 8 month old naps.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

My biggest influences are a mix of great folk/americana artists (John Prine, Bonnie Rait, Joni Mitchell, Brandi Carlile) and adult alternative pop/rock (Sheryl Crow, Phoebe Bridgers) and I love to fuse them in my music. I write personal songs that err on the folk/pop side and with the help of my incredibly talented producers, Stuart Cameron and Peter Fusco, a modern twist on my love for 90’s rock comes out.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

I was lucky enough to play to a sold-out (with COVID restrictions) show at the Confederation Centre of the Arts just last week and what a relief to be able to play live again. The next will be in June to celebrate the release of the album. My live show is epic and personal. You’ll know a lot about me before the night is through.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

I would suggest you dance around to “Have It All”.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

They never really waver. Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Jann Arden.
