Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

“My name is Amos Nadlersmith, I sing and play guitar in a band called Amos the Kid in Winnipeg. I grew up in the woods and moved to the big city about eight years ago. I’ve been writing music since I was a kid and performing under different names for a while now, but this is my first real go of things.”

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

“It’s hard to name one genre, although I’m sure everyone says that…I identify heavily with 90s slacker rock/indie, and I am heavily influenced by early outlaw country and psych indie rock coming out of Philly (such as War on Drugs, Kurt Vile, and others). I’m not sure the music sounds like anything else coming out of Winnipeg and I’m trying to stay true to my own sound to some degree. I write best when in solitude—I spend much of my summers camping, adventuring or working in remote areas so partially this inspires the psyche of my songs. The other big influence is where I came from, a small wholesome always quiet town in southern Manitoba. I love where I’m from and I write about my memory there. “

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

“No live shows scheduled right now due to covid, we had a fairly exciting year planned last year with festivals and different shows but covid said otherwise, so we made the new EP instead. My band members are very talented and well versed in live performance — coming from bands such as Yes We Mystic, Merin, and Palm Trees — so I would say the live vibe is very comfortable at least in terms of the rest of the band. I would say I myself am still learning how to be a front person, but I’m very excited by the thrill of the thing.”

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

“Mountain View is my personal favourite and the most true to my writing style lyrically, as far as the storytelling side of things.”

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

“The other bands in my label’s orbit are incredible and Winnipeg is really making a name for itself right now so I’ll say Virgo Rising, JayWood, and Julian’s Daughter for sure! Some other non-Winnipeg bands I love are Nap Eyes, FRIGS, and Daniel Romano just to name a few. Canada has so many amazing bands it’s tough to quantify.”
