Interview – Alexis Taylor

Award-winning Canadian country-pop artist Alexis Taylor has released her new single, “Getaway”, and with a year of increased travel restrictions both behind us, and ahead further still, it’s just what the listener may need.

“If there was ever a need to escape from reality and take a vacation, 2020 and 2021 are it,” the Huntsville, Ontario-raised, Nashville, Tennessee-based artist muses. “Since so many of us were stuck inside our homes, I had the idea that perhaps a vacation does not necessarily mean going to a particular place, but rather a ‘Getaway’ can be about the person or people you are with.

“Don’t get me wrong,” she insists, “I love going on trips — especially to the beach! But to me, it has never been about going to a certain place, it has always been about being with that person who makes it feel like a vacation, no matter where you are. It’s simply the fact that you’re together, and spending time with them; that’s what makes the days feel special.

“We may not be able to travel where we want to right now, but we still have each other. Sometimes, surrounding yourself with the people you love during the hard times is exactly what you need to pull through!”

Produced by multi-award winning musician John Willis (Shania Twain, Taylor Swift, Willie Nelson, Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan), “Getaway” is the latest to land from Taylor, and follows last year’s trio of singles, “Just One Look (Wariner Remix),” “Cool With That,” and “Desperado.”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi!  I’m Alexis Taylor, I was born and raised in the small town of Huntsville, Ontario into a very musical family. For as long as I can remember, I was always singing around the house, writing songs, or doing something music related. I am lucky enough to say that for the past few years now, I have been able to turn it into a career!!

Tell us about the recording process behind Getaway?

The recording process behind ‘Getaway’ was awesome. I wrote ‘Getaway’ back in early 2020 and got to record it in Nashville, Tennessee with John Willis who is a studio award-winning session musician and producer. We finished recording it during the Fall of 2020, right in the middle of COVID! So I had to wear a mask the whole time at the studio except for when I was in the vocal booth, recording; which took a little while to get used to! But John truly brought the song to life and made the song come together right before my eyes. I have worked with John in the past, and was very impressed (yet again) with how amazing he made ‘Getaway’ sound!

What was the highlight of 2020?

The highlight of my 2020 was getting to spend time with my family. Because of COVID, I wasn’t really able to tour much or be on the road like I usually am. So I was lucky enough to spend most of my time with my family. Whether it was driving around town, going to the grocery store, or hanging out around a bonfire, I was definitely blessed to spend some extra time with my family even if it was government-mandated! I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

What do you hope to accomplish in your career in 2021?

One of the main things I am hoping to accomplish in the next few months is releasing my very first EP album! I am working on finishing it up in the next few weeks with John Willis in the studio and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it! It will consist of 5 original songs that I wrote solely by myself over the past year. Releasing an EP has been a goal of mine for quite some time, so I am really looking forward to taking this next step and letting my fans hear more of my music!! I think they are really going to enjoy hearing what I have been working on!

Is there anyone out there that you would like to collaborate with in the future?

I would absolutely love to collaborate with Carrie Underwood someday. I have always been a huge fan of hers ever since her American Idol days!! I really look up to her as a vocalist and performer, and it would be a dream come true to work with her one day. I think that I could really learn a lot from her, and would truly appreciate any advice or pointers she might have for someone who is less experienced than her.
