Five Questions With Matt Paxton

Hamilton, ON-based singer-songwriter, Matt Paxton has unveiled his new single, “Dance Me Home”. The song is a stripped-back acoustic folk track about love and adventure.

Written between Matt’s hometown and several European cities, the spirit of the song captures memories from each of those places, turning them into poems and then placing them within a melody.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey! I’m Matt Paxton, a songwriter, and performer from Hamilton, Ontario.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

When it comes to art and writing music, I like paintings and songs that hit me straight away. Making a record, or painting a picture, it feels like I’m starting to realize I am just as much a visual artist as a songwriter. When you’re painting a picture, you can sometimes capture something that you can’t fit into the back of a song. Maybe you can get something in a song that you can’t get in a picture. So doing the two of those things more and more and taking time to paint gives me this great feeling of moving forward in two ways. I don’t know if I am able to function without writing songs or painting. It seems difficult to go a week without working on a song or painting a picture. Certain records bring you back and open windows in your head that may be closed for a period of time. The things that you write and you paint are all connected to me. At the end of the day, if the lyric, or melody grabs you, makes you feel something, then that’s all really anyone needs to know. I love turning memories into poems and poems into lyrics and lyrics into songs. It helps me document my life when looking back, and helps me move forward at the same time.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

No shows planned due to the pandemic, but when I released the “Dance Me Home” single in late November, I performed the song on my roof in Hamilton and it was filmed by Southern Souls. You can check out the performance here.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Dance Me Home

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
