Five Questions With Eclecticus

Toronto, ON-based rock duo, Eclecticus has released fourth and newest album, Take Me Away, along with a brand new single, “Movin’ On”.

The album was carefully crafted by the couple during the nation’s designated social isolation period this year.

“The album reflects the current environment,” Gar Reid shares. “We worked tirelessly in our studio to really convey a sound and feeling like you’re in the room with us.”

“For us, this was a very creative time,” co-front Tiina LeMay adds. “Considering the historical circumstances we are living in right now, I think many singer-songwriters have found they are inspired to write during this time.”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Gar: Sure, ECLECTICUS is our rock band hailing from Toronto, CA.  Tiina and I had been playing in a five-piece band for the last few years with three records under our belt. Then came the pandemic and we decided to embark on a rock acoustic album called “Take Me Away”, performed and produced by the two of us. During the lockdown, we were not able to get together with our then bandmates and, as such, we had to fulfill our need to still make and play music.

TiinaAs life and music partners, Gar and I have recorded other albums but this one was different. It was certainly a creative time for us, writing songs relevant to the times. We are fortunate that we have the equipment and Gar’s know-how as a mixing engineer, as well as we are experienced recording artists and musicians.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Gar: Our writing style is based on rock roots. The songs tend to be thought-provoking and introspective, where each song tells a different story.

Tiina: We have fun and serious songs alike. Our music has been noted as soulful, dynamic, laid back, yet sometimes irreverent. We write with acoustic guitars, so it just made sense to record an album that highlights the instrument, bringing the vocals upfront and center.

How are you keeping creative without shows? What are you spending your time on?

Tiina: Writing, recording, and making music videos and other visual assets. I really enjoy doing that. Also, we have played online and at a few outdoor jams with friends during the summer.

Gar: And, drinking beer! haha

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Gar: That is really hard because each song is different; it’s like a Sophie’s Choice moment but let’s go with Movin’ On. It seems to be a song that people really enjoy based on the feedback we have been getting. However, I encourage listeners to enjoy the album front to back and just vibe out.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Tiina: Neil Young, of course, The Hip, Rheostatics, Death from Above, The Weeknd, Dallas Green, and Shawn Santalucia tend to be our go-to Canadian acts.
