Five Questions With Mad Ones

Toronto, ON-based post-punk band, Mad Ones has released their new single, “Run On You”.

“It’s 3099. Love reigns supreme and all beings live in interplanetary harmony. Yet for some strange reason the universal population is digging on a tune with sloppy slide guitar, a funky beat and a refrain acknowledging that when we abandon our neighbour in their time of need we abandon our own need for existence.”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi Readers! Andrew DeVillers here, Mad Ones (lead singer/guitar player/songwriter) and Fortune Stellar Records (co-founder/producer).

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Mad Ones are predominantly a live based rock n roll trio, with the occasional flair for adding fun studio stuff like keys, strings, and maybe even horns when possible. Usually, it starts with bringing song ideas into the rehearsal space, getting Russ Fernandes (Bass/Vocals) and Adam Balsam (Drums/Vocals) to do their thing. When I’ve written the lyrics and we are happy with arrangements we’ll usually play them live 20-30 times and then record them. That might change moving forward with the COVID restrictions, but we were able to get most of this album sorted when we could still perform, sweat, and luckily the bed tracks were recorded in a big enough space to allow proper distance.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Happy to say we do! We pre-taped a performance for the Mondo NYC festival at my favourite studio Canterbury Music. in Parkdale (Toronto). The festival is naturally all virtual this year and will be available for the public to watch for free online Oct 13-16. Expect a high energy show with zero backing tracks and you’ll never hear a song the same way twice.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
