Who: Clerel, Motel Raphaël
What: Pop Montreal 2020
When: September 25th 2020
Where: Rialto Rooftop and Le Ministère, Montréal QC

The 2020 edition of Pop Montreal has been in full swing since Wednesday, offering a hybrid version made of small-capacity live shows accross the city, and livestreams on their virtual Funhouse! Last night, we checked out two of the live shows, starting on the rooftop of the beautiful Rialto Theater with Clerel!

Fresh off this year’s edition of La Voix and accompanied by guitarist Kento Kataoka, Clerel serenaded the sold-out audience as the sun came down and the moon came up. The dreaminess of the venue perfectly matched the poeticness of his romantic lyrics. Even if Fall has set on the city, and you could feel a slight breeze after the sun went down, the warmth of Clerel’s set and rhythms made for a perfect last summer night.

Afterwards, we made our way to the Ministère to check out Motel Raphaël! While their 2016 album “System” had a strong pop-rock feeling to it, Clara and Maya showed up on stage with acoustic guitars and delivered a stripped-back performance. The simplicity of the set allowed for the beauty of their introspective lyrics of heartbreak and longing to truly resonate. The complicity between the two was also undeniable, from knowing looks to perfect harmonies. Their 30-minute performance felt dreamy and intimate, the perfect way to end a Friday night!
