Five Questions With Michael Bernard Fitzgerald

Calgary, AB-based singer-songwriter, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald has released his new single, “Our River”. The track explores the idea that a song could paint a picture of the future, versus detailing something that had already happened.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Michael Bernard Fitzgerald or MBF for short, and I’m a singer/songwriter from Calgary, Canada.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I write hopeful music, it borders on folk and pop, and pulls texture from different genres and instruments. I write simple lyrics, I think there’s something beautiful in simple descriptive words.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

I do, I’ll be playing 50 shows in my backyard this summer, and will continue to play shows for the rest of the year (details at www.michaelbernardiftzgerald.com). I think shows are a great way to connect – and over the years we’ve played shows in all sorts of venues sometimes with massive amounts of band members on stage, and sometimes solo. The shows coming up are more in the style of ‘Our River’, relaxed evenings outdoors.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

I would suggest “Our River” – its the first of 13 songs that I’ll release this year.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

I look up to Joel Plaskett as a phenomenal artist, and person, Dan Mangan as an artist and thought leader in the Canadian industry, Begonia as an artist and performer and Tenille Townes as an artist and writer. There are so many more, but those are the first that come to mind today.
