Five Questions With Favours

Toronto, ON-based two-piece band, Favours has released their new single, “Lux Luv”, which is off of the duo’s upcoming LP, Made To Wait, set for release in August 2020.

“We spent years recording several versions of the song Lux Luv, working to unite the haunting melody with the lyrical plea for love that’s unattainable; “Near or far, where you are, you heal me, buy me time”. This track reflects on feelings of longing and loneliness, at a time when needing love and human connection is more important than ever. “Can we live in this light?” – cuts through distortion as the song comes to a close, leaving behind echos of trembling piano.”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

We are Favours from Toronto, we’re a two-piece band made up of Alex Zen and Jacq Andrade.  Jacq and I met making music videos for other artists and ended forming Favours as a kind of music and art project where we could channel our own creativity and ideas.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Our music is inspired by a mix of modern indie synth-rock (Men I Trust, Beach house) and inspired by Joy Division, Depeche Mode.  Our debut LP “Made to Wait” will be out summer 2020. We recorded the album with Josh Korody in Toronto at Candle Recording and the drums in a large warehouse in the suburbs of the city.  We try to write as much as possible and are working on tunes remotely during these pandemic times. We have a follow-up EP which we are working on right now with hopes to release Fall of 2020. So lots on the go!

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Sadly COVID completely derailed all of our plans, like many of our friends and peers.  We had plans to tour Canada and Europe with the release of “Made to Wait” but now, we’ll be really ‘made to wait’ until the end of social distancing to play live. We’re really keeping our fingers crossed in hopes we can play another show in 2020.  We just had the most amazing time with our friends in Montreal The Kommenden, which we can only hope will happen again soon.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

IN THE NIGHT. Somehow this one has less than a million plays on Spotify and did not get us massively famous despite it being a banger (or at least we think so).  Hahahaha. People do tend to get the tune stuck in their heads and we made it on the radio so that was really exciting for us.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

We’ll have to rep our own blood as Mark Andrade who plays drums and helps us produce music has a few projects “New River Beach” and “TIO”. I also play guitar in another band “The Holiday Crowd” who are fantastic English 80’s rock. We love the dreamy style of Katie Mcbride’s music. She has an incredible voice and we were lucky to play with her. Also Lover’s Touch has an incredible vibe and some really fun tunes. We’ve also had the pleasure of working with new artist Bedhead on music videos and live shows. Nyssa is another incredible force to be reckoned with in Toronto. She is a breath of fresh air with her indie-pop hits! I also used to play in a band called Invasions which have a large back catalogue that no one has heard of, we are re-releasing some albums on Spotify this month so give those a spin too!
