Toronto, ON-based musician, Jesse Gold released his newest single, “L” on May 8, 2020.
His single “L” looks inward as he wanted to address the amount of finger-pointing in the music industry: “you broke my heart,” “you left me,” etc. Recognizing these patterns, Jesse wanted to write from a deeper place of self-reflection while poking fun at ourselves.
Check out the single below, and find out more about Jesse via our Five Questions With segment.
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Jesse Gold! I’m a songwriter and musician based in Toronto. I make modern R&B/Pop music and I have a pet turtle.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I have a vast range of musical influences – from R&B greats like Craig David to songwriting and guitar legends like James Taylor. The diverse pool of musicians that inspire me have definitely helped carve out my own sound – acoustic guitar, soulful, swaggy pop music. When writing, I always start with music and melody. I’ll play some chords on the guitar that I’m feeling, and then start singing gibberish over that until I find a melody I like. Once I have a cool gibberish melody, I’ll start plugging lyrics in. I’m always writing lyric ideas into the notes app on my phone – so I’ll go through those and see if any of them fit.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
Performing live is my favourite thing to do – and when I feel the most at ease. I studied music in school, so it’s always fun for me to inject as much musicality into my live show as possible. It’s how I show what I’m really capable of as a musician. You can definitely expect some guitar solos and more vocal acrobatics than would normally make my records.
Obviously, with COVID happening there are no shows right now. I had a small tour planned that sadly had to be postponed. When things get back to normal I can’t wait to travel and play all of this new music live. But for now, I’m doing a lot of Instagram lives and collabs with other artists online. So definitely check those out!
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
I’d suggest they listen to “L” because it’s my latest release. I always think the most current music is the best representation of who an artist is. It’s also my favourite song of mine at the moment!
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
I’m not sure if you’ve heard of this Bieber guy? No, I listen to a lot of great Canadian artists – we have amazing talent here. I love Daniel Caesar, Alexisonfire, River Tiber, Savannah Ré, Wild Rivers, James Barker Band. I feel incredibly lucky to call some of these artists my friends and work alongside them. I’m super proud to be from here, and I hope to make music that one day makes people proud that I am too.
