Review – Tami Neilson

Album: CHICKABOOM!
Release Date: February 14, 2020
Genre: Country

When Tami Neilson set out to write her latest album, she said she knew she wanted “an album of punchy little songs” that “would still go boom” and that is what she has delivered on her latest outing with CHICKABOOM!. This latest record from the international country star is a short-but-sweet trip through a number of genres like roots, rockabilly, and soul, all executed to the highest quality one could expect from one of the world’s leading voices in country music. All that backed with raw, powerful lyrics, both in content and performance, CHICKABOOM! is without a doubt an exciting and empowering record from front to back.

On the opening track, “Call Your Mama”, Neilson makes it clear that she’s not looking for a man with his head in clouds. This lyrically-driven track, laden with twangy country guitar and belted vocals, sets the general tone of fierce independence for the rest of the album. Things get stripped down on “Queenie, Queenie” where Neilson sends one out for the moms in the world, single, stay-at-home, and every combination in between. It is this theme of looking out for one another on this record that makes it stand out as something special. Tami Neilson is a powerful and commanding voice for those women out there who may never have the chance to have one of their own. Shades of rock and roll legend Screamin Jay Hawkins can be heard on the following track, “You Were Mine” where Neilson belts out a tale of lost love and heartbreak. “Any Fool With A Heart” sounds like a classic country song straight out of 1960’s Nashville and features Neilson showing off a softer, more vulnerable side to her versatile singing voice.

Overall, CHICKABOOM! is a fun and punchy, but also evocative and memorable record with a lot to take away from. The music is upbeat and powerful when it needs to be, but also sullen and toned-down when it calls for it. The same goes for the vocals. Whether she’s belting out or calmly singing, either way, it is clear to the listener when you hear Neilson’s voice, you know what’s being said is 100% genuine.
