Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi! We’re Penny Diving from Montreal. You can say we’re a very tight-knit band comprised of two people who have known each other since our mother’s womb (maybe even before that?!): myself, Chantal Ambridge on guitar and vocals and my twin sister, Kathleen Ambridge on bass and back vocals. Then there’s my husband Thomas Augustin on guitars and synths and lastly, Jonathan Lafrance (drums) and Melissa Di Menna (keys, guitar) who join us for our live set.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Our music is very guitar-oriented with shoegaze and dream pop elements to it, although I hate stating categories ’cause it can be somewhat misleading.  I usually write when i’m alone at night in our basement, recording riffs and ideas on my phone’s voice memos. We then sort it all out together and record the tracks from home. It’s all very hermit-like and not super glam.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Our next show is in Montreal, for our album launch on February 14th. I would describe our live set as having a lot of loud-quiet-loud dynamics mixed with softer sounds and noisier moments as well. You can expect to feel a lot of loooove and emotioooooons coming through the noise for our launch!

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

“Nineteen” because I’d love to go back to feeling like “the world is my fucking oyster” while simultaneously smoking pot all day and watching re-runs of Passions on daytime t.v.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/artists?

Reviews, Anna Arrobas (two acts playing with us for our launch). Our good friends Corridor, Jesuslesfilles and Debate Club who’ve recently released an album. Also Victime from Quebec City, Bodywash from Montreal and Woolworm on the other side of the coast.
