Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
I go by the name of Joey Stylez, I am a singer/songwriter/rapper who started out by using music as a tool to combat the negative lifestyle I once submerged myself in.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I think there are 2 successful routes you can take to craft music. You can either use your mind and carefully think through each step of the process or you can use your spirit which is the lane I take. I go off of feeling, and the songs tend to write themselves as if I’m pulling them out of some invisible cloud that already has a library of songs, poems, paintings, and other creations.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
I typically perform once or twice a month. I’ve only been on 2 official tours since I got my debut in the music industry, but really this life’s become a tour. My stage show is a splash of lighting with a dash of tornado.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
I’m really proud of my latest single Super Power. As humans, we often struggle with our identity, but presently I feel very sure of my place in the bigger picture, and this song is a road map to where I am today, and what it looks like from here.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
I have always been a major fan of my partner Carsen Gray. We hung out 10 years back and when she showed me her singing I was shocked. So many girls have come up to me and told me they can sing, and I am always polite as I don’t wanna kill anyone’s dream, so I was expecting her to be one of these girls, but when she sang my jaw dropped to the floor. She could really sing! and she listened to every bit of advice I gave her and it has paid off for her.
