Christmas is just around the corner and along with the sights and sounds of the season, artist’s new and old start to create and release their own renditions of holiday classics and original material. Here is a look at this year’s newly released music that is sure to get you into the Christmas spirit. Add these songs to your tree trimming playlists, get your holiday parties going, or simply enjoy with friends and your favorite festive drink.
Heather Russell has released another breathtaking vocal performance with her new holiday single titled “Christmas Time With You.” The Toronto based singer, songwriter released the new holiday track in November and it is sure to get you into the holiday spirit. “Christmas Time With You” sets out to inspire all of us in sharing this special time with the ones you love.
Good Lovelies were thrilled to share the lead single “These Christmas Nights” from their new Christmas album Evergreen. The album was released in November and is the follow up to 2009’s release Under The Mistletoe. Evergreen features three new originals including the lead single, and an amazing collection of traditional songs such as “O Holy Night,” “Please Come Home For Christmas,” and The Beach Boys classic “Little Saint Nick” arranged with style and musical passion in a way only the Good Lovelies can create.
Melanie Peterson has released her single “Christmas Breaks My Heart” just in time for the holidays. The new single pursues Peterson’s ever-present songwriting theme of love and the melodic side of folk-pop. It was written during the summer of 2017 and recorded during the summer of 2018 and as she explains “It was an interesting challenge getting into the Christmas spirit when its 35 degrees outside!”
Elliot Maginot released the single “I’ll know my savior (Christmas all around)” to celebrate the holidays. As a big fan of Christmas, this is the follow up to last year’s release of “Christmas Ain’t Enough.” Filled with romantic arrangements “I’ll know my savior (Christmas all around)” is a beautiful love song that will comfort you during the holiday season.
Shawnee has released “Not Coming Home for Christmas” as a playful family chaos take on Christmas. The new song has a sing-a-long feel with catchy jingle bells and that warm feeling of Christmas, but with a twist kind of vibe. The track was written by Shawnee, alongside Tim Thorney and Matt O’Rourke and is Shawnee’s take on what Christmas is really like come holiday season.
Gord Bamford released his new Christmas single “Storybook Christmas” as an ode to a tradition reminiscent to the generational experience of a rural Canadian holiday. Bamford wrote this song with his own family Christmas experiences as the inspiration. “Storybook Christmas” is heartfelt, fun and down to earth. “Storybook Christmas” is all about the good and the bad when you have your whole family together for the Holidays and about enjoying it all.
HOFFEY has returned this year with their dreamy pop single “Holiday.” The track is described as a bleak look with a positive twist of what it was like to live in an abysmal apartment for a year. The duo explains “Holiday is a song most people can relate to – where you’ve been working at the same job, doing the same shit every day – to the point where you might lose your mind. This song is really about taking that dream vacation, so you can feel refreshed, renewed, and be a better version of yourself.”
Mariya Stokes new single “Christmas, Arizona” tells the story of an endearing and slightly delusional “mistress on a mission” who is chasing down the man of her dreams and attempting to break up his upcoming wedding. Written by Stokes, the song is named after a real ghost town in Arizona where the fictional wedding is taking place, the song combines traditional country storytelling with a twist of modern indie-pop production.
Scotty Kipfer is back with his brand new holiday release, “I Love It At Christmas.” The up-tempo track is a lighthearted look at the things we do around Christmastime such as lining up to meet Santa at the mall, struggling to find parking places, driving in cold and blowing snow, and trying to get your share of Christmas dinner before your Uncle Tommy gets to it all. “The cover art was really fun to create,” explained Kipfer “Nothing says Christmas quite like Bing Crosby, so we spoofed one of his old Christmas album covers. It was a real joy to work with a terrific Disney artist, Jason Zucker, who nailed the illustration.”
Phöenix Lazare has just released TWO original Holiday songs “Winter White” and “Evergreen.” The redheaded coffee addicted, singer-songwriter from a Salt Spring Island, BC has released these two tracks right on time for the Christmas season.
Holly Hyatt has ventured a little further into the holidays with her New Year themed track “Sunny Day in January“ which is out now. The song was Hyatt and Clinton Swanson and mixed and recorded at On the Ball Studios in Nelson, BC. Hyatt describes the song as “a fun song all about enjoying those Sunny winter days in the snow!” You can check out the video here.
Alli Walker has released her first original Christmas track titled “Our Christmas.” Coproduced in Nashville with Dave Cohen “Our Christmas” is about how “Typical family Christmases aren’t always so typical. From bickering with your family to running late to church to getting the last pick of Christmas trees, to wrapping presents on the kitchen floor, and getting drunk on egg nog with your Dad. But that’s what makes the best memories, and that’s what makes each family Christmas unique” Walker explains.
