PREMIERE – New Wales releases single, “Winnipeg”

Winnipeg, MB-based band, New Wales is made up of seasoned members of the Winnipeg music scene, Rob Mitchell, David Pankratz, Matthew Harder, and Sandy Taronno.

The four have unveiled their single, “Winnipeg”, which they explain is a simple song for their hometown.

“Our city is beautiful, challenging, exciting, and frustrating. The song uses a fictional relationship to explore the lives we live here. We recorded this one at Paintbox Recording with Rusty Matyas and Lloyd Peterson. They definitely helped us lean into our love of The Travelling Wilburys, unabashedly pulling inspiration from a band we all really love.”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi Canadian Beats! We’re New Wales, a brand new outfit made up of seasoned members of the Winnipeg music scene. After more than two decades of working with various artists in the Canadian music scene, we’re excited to be starting a brand new project.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Years of experience has taught us that this is more fun when we focus on the songs instead of the egos. There’s no specific goal other than writing and recording good music.
Singable, memorable tunes with personal lyrics that have universal appeal. We’ve also learned that simple isn’t easy. It’s actually really tough to distill a lyric or a melody down to the essentials. We work hard to make the arrangements sound simple.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Just like the recordings, the stage show is all about the songs. It looks like a rock band but with no recognizable lead singer or lead guitarist. It’s more collaborative. Like the Travelling Willburies, but younger.

Our apologies to the wider Canadian audience, but we don’t have any touring booked right now. For the Winnipeggers, come check us out on Dec 4 at the Good Will.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Our new single, called ‘Winnipeg’.

Our city. Beautiful, exciting, frustrating, sure. But we’re proud to call it home.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Wintersleep, Begonia, Carly Rae Jepsen… and Rush
