Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Serena: Hey there! My name is Serena Sun and I am a singer-songwriter from Vancouver, Canada! Thanks so much for having us.

Jeremy: And I’m Jeremy Lim, a producer and composer, also from Vancouver. It’s a pleasure being here!

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Serena: My writing can be described as honest, bare, and relatable. My goal as a songwriter is to bring listeners on a journey and to share authentic stories about specific moments in my life. I write so that when people relate to my music, they know they are not alone in their experiences.

Jeremy: On my own, I lean toward floaty atmospheres, female leads, and soaring melodies, but I mostly produce for clients these days, so I’m a bit of a chameleon. It’s definitely a boon. I get to grow a lot, and when I work with others – like Serena – we usually find our footing pretty fast, and every song’s a little different based on our middle ground.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Serena: Yes! I will be performing a show on November 14 at the Railway Stage and Beer Cafe in Vancouver. It will be a stripped down acoustic set, so I’m very excited to share my music in an intimate-gathering kinda way. For those of you haven’t seen me live, I’d say you’ll definitely see me feel the messages behind my music while I’m performing, and I love to have some fun with the more upbeat songs; so if you like unapologetic awkward dancing, I am your girl.

Jeremy: Not me. I put down my turntables a long time ago. Shame, because I was also about that unapologetic, awkward dancing. Serena will just have to wiggle on my behalf.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Serena: “Release Me”, a song Jeremy Lim and I co-wrote and recently released! It’s my honest take on the struggles I had after a serious relationship ended last year.

Jeremy: Yeah – Serena really poured herself into that one. It’s also our reunion song after a six year hiatus, so it’s a great place to start.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Serena: Ahhh so many! One of my best friends in the music scene is SO talented – CATE. Highly recommend her as someone to watch.

Jeremy: Right now, there’s this Montreal singer named Sophie Chen who’s getting all of my replay action. “MÊME SI, MÊME SI” is REALLY good. It may even be my favourite chanson. Also from Montreal – but formerly Vancouverites – are Namoo Nara. Criminally underappreciated. Such powerful vocals and production. Lovely people too. Check out “Playground” for that goodness. “Your Hands” by GRAE? Haunting. Canada’s incredibly blessed for good music.
