Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey, this is Erin Searson from the band Searson! My sister Colleen and I have been playing and performing music for pretty much our entire lives together.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
We like to describe our music as embracing Canada’s old-time, traditional sounds into contemporary roots music; we love blending spirited fiddling with sibling harmony vocals and energetic step dancing. We grew up in the Ottawa Valley and were influenced by the culture of Ottawa Valley fiddling and step dancing. It was a solid foundation to build our love of music on. Over the years, we started writing our own fiddle tunes that had flavours of French Canadian, Irish & Scottish. Our songwriting had a pop influence to it but we still had the fiddle flowing throughout these tunes, keeping us firmly rooted with sounds from our hometown. With every album, I find that we grow with our writing style and are constantly learning and experimenting – and I hope that never changes. I love constantly pushing ourselves and our expectations.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
Yes, we are very excited about our upcoming live performances! This Friday, September 27 we will perform a release show in Syracuse, NY followed by a two-day music festival in Bethlehem, PA. Later in the fall, we will tour to Ireland/UK followed by some great local shows near our hometown in Burnstown & Micksburg, ON.
Performing live is our favourite way to share our music! That is why we chose to make our 10th album a live album – and record it in front of our fans, family and friends. We have toured extensively throughout our career, so it’s where we feel the most comfortable. Our live show is very energetic, genuine and just plain fun for the crowd.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
I would love for them to hear our single release, “Another Circle Around the Sun.” It’s a nod to our past and it’s one of my favourite vocal songs that we’ve written. The fiddle part throughout the song is so beautiful, I always look forward to performing this song live.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
My sister and I have always been fans of Neil Young, The Band, Natalie MacMaster, Bryan Adams, Randy Bachman – our list goes on and we are so proud to be Canadian musicians and to represent our country wherever we tour.
