Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Absolutely! I’m Callie McCullough, third generation in a musical family, and practically grew up backstage! I always love the album cuts more than the hit singles, drink coffee like it’s water and can’t get through a day without accidentally saying something I shouldn’t.  Toured for years in bands, moved to Nashville 5 years ago, and am so excited to be releasing my first single as a solo artist, thank you so much for having me on Canadian Beats!

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Most of my influences come from Traditional Country, Folk and Bluegrass music; and you’ll hear that in this album. I’m taking the roots and nostalgia of the music that I love and trying to find ways to make it into something new that is fresh and original. I’m definitely a lover of ballads and sad songs, anything that breaks your heart I’m a junkie for! I think as a writer and as an artist, it’s important not to get caught up in the factory mentality of cranking out songs. These songs are stories of my life over the past 5 years in Nashville and we took our time with them, they are intricate and unique and we brought them to life in a way that honors that.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Yes, for sure! I’d say my live shows are mellow, relaxed and funny! A lot of my original music is pretty ballad-heavy; so I love to pep up the crowd by telling jokes and sharing witty banter, plus you can expect a few old school covers thrown in for fun. I’m very relaxed at my shows; it’s all about making music you love with people you like and having a good time! The bulk of my shows are in and around Nashville for the next couple months, but I am cooking up some cool shows in Ontario for October and around Christmas time with my Ontario Artist buddies! If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Five Dollar Pearls! I knew as soon as we finished writing it that this would be my first single as a solo artist…there was just this intangible thing around this song and I’m stoked to send it out into the world! It’s vulnerable and honest because it’s my story, and also speaks to a feeling we’ve all had of not being good enough. It’s produced in a stripped back way featuring dobro and mandolin instrumentation which I adore and it’s just very me…

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favorite Canadian bands/ artists?

I’m a big nerd for older music and was hugely influenced by Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell. My favorite Canadian bands are South Mountain and The Western Swing Authority all amazing players and keeping that Traditional Country and Roots Music alive! Solo artist wise in Country I’m a huge supporter of both Scotty Kipfer who’s songwriting I adore, and Kelly Prescott!  In the folkier vein Jadea Kelley and Liam Russell both put out amazing EPs recently and the world needs more music like that!
