Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is margø, and I’m an alternative rock/pop artist from Canada. I’m here to make loud, unapologetic music with the intent of providing a soundtrack for those who are finding their voice.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
Growing up I was constantly surrounded by rock music, and I’ve always tried to incorporate that influence into my songs. I like to combine pop style beats with a heavier rock feel to create a unique, edgy sound. For writing style, this project has always been about reclaiming your power and finding your voice. My music aims to be unfiltered and honest, and the goal of my writing is to leave listeners feeling empowered.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
Yes! I have a show coming up Saturday, March 23rd at Bohemia in Edmonton, AB. I currently have a few shows over the summer in the works and am in the midst of planning a small tour of western Canada for the fall of 2019 as well. My shows are full of energy! We combine the electronic aspects of my music with live instruments to create a really full, danceable set. I love to get the crowd jumping and singing along, it’s really a lot of fun. Live performances are my favourite part of this project and I’m so excited to be playing lots of new music – you’ll definitely want to check my shows out!
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
I just released my debut single In Between on March 7th and it’s available on all streaming platforms for you to give it a listen! In Between hits you with powerful bass right from the beginning of the song, and combines melodic lyrics with a gritty rock twist. It’s the first of many songs I’m planning to release this year – stay tuned for a couple more singles over the spring/summer and my debut EP in the fall!
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/artists?
I love how the Canadian music scene is full of such talented female musicians. I’m such a big fan of Jessie Reyez, Alessia Cara, Tegan and Sara, and Leah Fay (from July Talk) – they all are strong, outspoken women in the music industry who impress me so much, and they all really encompass the type of musician I strive to be. I also love bülow, her lyrics are fantastic and her music is so catchy – I definitely would love to see her play live.
