Five Questions With Gold Complex

Toronto, ON-based 8-piece soul/pop band, Gold Complex has just released their debut album, New Soul. The album follows the release of their acclaimed self-titled EP which was released in 2015.

“Acrylic Heart”, the signature track from the album, is a powerful, soulful ballad that explores romantic emotional manipulation from a range of perspectives.

The band shares,

“This song is unique. Its verses are written in the third person, describing a narrative unfolding between a couple in a toxic relationship. In contrast, the chorus is written in first person, sung as a cri de cour of someone conflicted in that relationship.”

Check out the single below and find out more about Gold Complex in our Five Questions With segment.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi Canadian Beats! We are Gold Complex, an 8 Piece band from Toronto. Our sound is what we like to call “soul/pop.” It’s got elements of funk & r&b to it, and it’s a modern appropriation of the old school, soulful sounds we all love from back in the day. Artists we grew up listening to like Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake play major influences.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Our sound is defined by rich vocal harmonies, a smooth 3 piece horn section, irresistibly catchy melodies, and a relentlessly tight groove. In the case of our debut album, New Soul (out Friday, February 22nd) the album tells the story of the progression of multiple romantic relationships from different perspectives. There are ups and downs, abstract questions and definitive answers. New Soul is about love, lyrically and musically, in all of its shapes and sizes. The main songwriters, Andrew Dawson (guitar, producer), Will Bowes (lead vocals) and Blake Day (keyboard) all have a distinct writing style, complementing each other well and each telling a “different side of the story.”

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

We certainly do. First, we couldn’t be more excited to be hosting our record release party in Toronto at Lee’s Palace on Saturday, February 23rd with special guest Henry Nozuka! The record has taken us 3 years to finish and the show is going to be nothing short of electric, all hands on deck, celebratory musical experience! Discounted tickets can be found at goldcomplexband.com and we hope to see you out there dancing!

We will also be performing in Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto for a free, all ages event called “Celebrate Toronto” on the afternoon of Saturday, March 9th. Nathan Phillips Square is an iconic landmark in the heart of downtown Toronto and we can’t wait to celebrate the city with our music. Stay tuned for details on set times.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

It would have to be “Driver”. It’s the second single off of our upcoming debut album, New Soul, and you can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHwY-mXpVYk

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

There is so much great music happening in Canada right now, it’s really exciting! Of course we’re listening to Henry Nozuka, who is releasing brand new music in the very near future, Busty and the Bass, Birds of Bellwoods, Aphrose, Yuka, Jordan Hart & Emily Schultz, and Daniel Caesar! Thank you guys again for the feature! You also gave a stellar review of a show of ours at Adelaide Hall a few years back, so we really appreciate the continued support!
