Five Questions With Radiant Baby

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m a daytime psychologist and a nighttime musician/artist. Music and therapy have nothing to do with each other and I really like that. Combining these two activities allows me to explore and experience totally different aspects of life. It’s very stimulating and I need a lot of stimulation and challenges, otherwise, I get restless.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I explored different sounds and atmospheres since I started writing music. Initially, I was just writing electronic music with no vocals and didn’t think I would ever sing. As I started Radiant Baby about 3 ½ years ago, I got more excited and wanted to express that in my music and performance. I started singing, so I could communicate more directly and energetically with the audience when performing. I feel like my EP in 2017 transmitted a celebratory atmosphere that was somewhat uniform, so I wanted to show a wider range of emotions with the new LP. I wanted to bring a sense of vulnerability to express the nuanced and contradictory aspects of my personality and musical tastes. To convey that, I wrote more fleshed-out lyrics and melodies and decided to strip down a few of the songs, while keeping a high level of energy on others.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

I just played in Quebec city last Friday and it was a great time. My next shows are in Montreal and Toronto in February  22nd and 23rd, respectively. Then, I’m playing in NYC on March 8th and 10th as part of The New Colossus Festival.

The live show merges electronic sounds and IRL instrumentation. I was performing solo until recently and I starting performing with two musicians for the album tour. Now, there’s drums, bass, guitar, synths and crazy lighting effects. The live show is very energetic and dancy, it definitely brings a party atmosphere and I tend to bring a lot of life when I perform.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

“Funny Games”. I think it’s the edgiest song on the album, I really like it.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Homeshake, Marie Davidson, Caribou, Destroyer, to name a few 😉
