Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Tara Shannon and I am a singer/songwriter from Russell a small town just outside of Ottawa. I’ve been writing music for over 20 years, I’m best known for the Butterfly Child song for my friend Jonathan Pitre and Be You, a theme song I wrote for the Be You Girl campaign that benefits Big Brothers Big Sisters. After a break from performing to raise my seven kids, I am back on stage with a new album. I’m also a hockey mom, entrepreneur, founder of Willow Sound Records and music industry consultant.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style
I write from all places…sometimes a melody first, sometimes a lyric idea….my style as a writer is all over the place…I try to go where the song wants to go and not limit the process…the songs I write for myself as an artist usually have a positive or empowering message or a healing theme….I’m a lyrics person so I really like storytelling type songs.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
I next show is opening for Doc Walker at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on Feb 7th. My shows usually have tears and laughter involved. I tend to make people cry from one or the other lol
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Oooh, that’s a tough one. I would say if they want pure me from my heart as a songwriter, it would be “December Road” from my album Unfinished.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/artists?
Canada has such amazing talent! Right now I’m loving Tenille Townes….her hit song Somebody’s Daughter is so, so good and with such an important message…Donovan Woods is a killer songwriter too…love his work…too many to choose from! Proud to be a Canadian songwriter!
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
