Review – Katrina Van Humbeck

Album: Doing a New Thing
Release: October 13, 2018
Genre: Jazz/Contemporary

Katrina Van Humbeck returns with her sophomore album Doing a New Thing, and for the Winnipeg-based songwriter, she is doing exactly that. Humbeck wears a lot of hats; performer, mother, songwriter, educator, pianist. She seems to have dabbled in almost every aspect of music. Her debut album Blue & Beyond came after she suffered a personal loss, pushing her towards songwriting.

Doing a New Thing is a collection of 11 songs with very sweet, almost fairytale-like arrangements. Balancing both soft ballads and uptempo melodies, Van Humbeck puts her pianist and performer skills to work creating stories about love, loss, and living life. One of the highlights comes from the sultry “Ocean Deep”, where she sings passionately to her other against a lovely piano melody. The title track “Doing a New Thing” is a pretty good time, don’t miss the killer horn section. Fans of adult contemporary ladies like Diana Krall or Amy Grant will appreciate the way Katrina Van Humbeck approaches her music. I do hope she continues to grow and hone her craft.
