Edmonton, AB-based house music duo, ANZU is made of Simon Belanger and Jesse Silkie. The two have released a brand new EP, Without Love Vol. 2. Give the EP a listen below, and find out more about them in our Five Questions With segment.
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
We are Jesse Silkie and Simon Belanger and together we make ANZU.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
We make house music. Our music blends the use of samples and live instrumentation. A lot of what we do uses a technique called micro-sampling, where we find small snippets of audio and build new ideas out of them. Then we’ll add bass, drums, keyboards, or whatever else we want from there. Our sound is inspired by a lot of different eras but we try and use these ideas and make them more current. Artists like Todd Edwards, Justice and Sebastian have been a big influence on us.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
We play a lot of DJ sets in our hometown of Edmonton. We use CDJ’s and we play our original tracks mixed with a lot of other disco and house tracks. Depending on the show we’ve played up to 4-hour sets.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Probably ‘’Theme From Depression’’. Its a good representation of what we do.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
MSTRKRFT is a big influence on us, and their new album is great.
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
