Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
My name is Jessie Munro and I’m a 24-year-old singer/songwriter born and raised in Toronto, ON. I’ve spent the last five years living in the United States studying in Boston at Berklee College of Music and living in LA.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I grew up listening to a lot of classic rock and singer/songwriter musicians, bands and artists like Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Carole King and James Taylor. When I started writing and working on my artist project it was really important to me to be able to integrate the sounds and storytelling of the artists that inspire me. My EP On My Own uses a mixture of acoustic instruments and electronic elements with pop/rock/r&b vocals.
My writing style changes the more I write and collaborate with other musicians but for the most part, I work with my writing partner and producer Jonah Summerfield. He co-wrote and produced the EP and a lot of the new music I’m working on now.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
As I’m typing this out I’m in the car on the road back to Toronto from LA for a show at the Revival on October 4th! This will be the first time playing original music in Toronto and I’m really excited to share what I’ve been working on.
Live my set up consists of a 3 or 4 piece band (not including myself). Co-writer and producer Jonah Summerfield also Music Director and our live drummer, Maddie Jay plays bass and Luke Robinson on guitar.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
That’s a tough question! I would have to say “If Your Eyes Could Talk”, however, I have a real soft spot for the title track “On My Own”. I think a first-time listener should check out “If Your Eyes Could Talk”!
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
I’m a huge Daniel Caesar fan, and I also love Charlotte Day Wilson and JP Saxe! Check them out!
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
