Who: The Kents
Where: The Lindsay Armouries
When: Friday, August 24, 2018
When you think of your hometown, what do you think of? Your old school, your friends, or maybe your favourite restaurant? If you’re from Lindsay, Ontario you think of The Kents and what their music has done for the town, as well as for the residents. On August 24th, they played at the local armouries and reminded us why hometown pride matters and that even a small town can turn up the volume.
The guys took the stage, and everyone who was sitting, idling around the bar, or talking with their friends stopped to watch them do their last-minute tuning and take their spots to start the concert. With all eyes on them, they smiled at each other and that’s when the music came to life and so did the crowd. The room erupted into cheers, hoots and hollers as the band struck those chords, hit that bass drum and sang those lyrics. In case you didn’t know, The Kents have one song, “The Stakes”, that has been featured on Hockey Night in Canada, MLB’s World Series and the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics; with platforms like this, it has lead to our small but mighty town screaming every lyric to all of their songs.
The Kents released an EP last year and while we are anxiously awaiting for the release of an album, they have been testing out new songs at their shows to get a feel for what they want on their first album; I think it is safe to say that every song they played on Friday night was well received by the fans. The group has a unique sound that appeals to every age group and is the type of music that everyone can relate to. Their music touches every inch of your soul, and it is obvious that the fans feel that power if their movements and excitement that I saw on Friday night is any indication.
This show made you smile at the person beside you, friend or stranger, it didn’t really matter. The music has a way of bringing people together, singing at the top of your lungs and getting a little dancey.
The Kents are heading out for a few more Ontario shows in September, check out their website to see if they’re playing in a city near you, it’s an experience unlike any other and you won’t want to miss them!
