Guelph, ON-based award-winning duo, Tragedy Ann has released a new video for their debut single, “The Last Thing” from their upcoming debut full-length album, Matches. The alt/folk duo is made up of Braden Phelan and Liv Cazzola and are recent winners of not one, but two Folk Music Ontario awards.

The video for “The Last Thing”, which audio and video credit for goes to Sam Boer, is a simple but very effective idea: Two people, two voices, two instruments, and one continuous shot to capture their heartfelt performance of an excellent song they wrote about the push and pull of a romantic relationship that may or may not be imminently ending.

Liv Cazzola shares on the single,

“It’s hard to let go of the familiar, even when you know it is making you a stranger to your heart. ‘The Last Thing’ is an upbeat lament to the precarious ways we hang onto ourselves and each other.”

The duo will be heading on tour in Canada (ON, QC, BC, NS, NB) in support of their new album with stops in Toronto (release concert at Burdock on October 13), Hamilton, London, Oakville, Montreal, Vancouver, and more! Check out the full list of shows below.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Howdy! Liv Cazzola and Braden Phelan from Guelph-based duo Tragedy Ann here. We hope that this is finding you well fed, rested, and loved. Liv and I really appreciate you taking the time to give this article a read, and our new video a watch!

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Well, we’re a duo that writes and performs story-forward folk music carried by accordion, guitars, ukulele, and singing saw. We have a lot of fun playing with vocal harmony in ways that give provocative emotional texture. Because most of our music is written individually but edited collaboratively, it means that our tunes end up taking on a fair amount of variety, whether it be in the driving instrument of the song, the pace, subject matter, tone, etc. The thread that links our songs is a confessional level of honesty, even if it’s self-deprecating.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

We do! We’ve got a 40+ date tour coming up this autumn that will take us across Canada to celebrate the release of our upcoming album Matches (You can see if we’re coming your way here. Our performances incorporate just about as much dynamic potential as one can get from a primarily acoustic duo. We have a lot of fun when we play, and do our best to ensure that audiences are having as much of a hoot as we are. It’s important to us that we present a well-rounded show, and we balance our fun and humorous songs with the more sobering material that we have on tap.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

That’s a tough one, considering the variety of tunes that we’ve got… Right now we’d say The Last Thing, the single that we released a couple weeks ago, but once the album’s out we’d also recommend Regulars. We’re pretty proud of that tune, and how much emotional content we were able to include while still keeping it to three chords and minimal melody. This one’s a collective look at the people inhabiting our local dive bars.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Oh wow, that’s an easy one! Right now we’re really digging Campbell Woods, Mike T. Kerr (putting out a record in October that’s sounding phenomenal!), Annie Sumi, The O’Pears, we just discovered Fruiting Bodies at Blue Skies two weeks ago, Moonfruits, Cold Tea, Inna Powell, Rae Spoon, Olivia & The Creepy Crawlies, Samson Wrote, etc. etc. etc!
