Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Charles Cleyn. I’m a Canadian singer-songwriter from Ottawa but I currently live in Berlin. I’ve been following Canadian Beats for a long time and so it is a real honour to be featured as an artist.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I’m a solo act. I write and sing my own songs but I play with a talented team of people in Berlin. My music is in the singer-songwriter genre but I try to push the limits when it comes to alternative and pop music. My writing style is focused on the vocals and lyrics. I have a stripped down approach when it comes to songwriting and production that make the vocals and lyrics stand out.

Do you have any upcoming shows?

For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance? I have a very big upcoming show soon. But it’s private 🙂 I’m getting married and I’ll be playing some music for my bride. But other than that, I just came off a small tour in eastern Ontario and I’ll soon be going back to Berlin to start a small European tour and then I’ll stay put in Berlin for a while. Visit my Facebook page for the list of shows.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

I would suggest they listen to Heart as it is the most unique song on the album. It’s an emotional journey that has swelling cellos and strong vocals. I hope you enjoy it.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Sam Roberts Band, Bahamas, and Daniel Caesar are by far my current favourite Canadian artists. And more recently, Shawn Mendes, although he is a young pop star, I was impressed with the way he spoke to media. His most recent album, In My Blood, was a good example of how his songwriting has improved significantly.
