Singer-songwriter Rachel Beck has recently released her self-titled solo album. On top of this, she has unveiled a video for her single, “Hearts On Fire”, which you can check out below, and find out more about this PEI-based artist.
“At the heart of it, this song is about living in the moment,” comments Rachel. “Filming this video was such a rush, because my friends and I did exactly that. We leapt off a bridge into water that was 4°C (thank goodness for wetsuits!), ventured out to cliffs overlooking the ocean, and set off fireworks on the beach at sunset. In hindsight, it may not have been the best idea to shoot a summer video in early May, but the wildness of it added to the fun.”
Rachel is currently on tour with four dates remaining:
July 26 – Burdock, Toronto, ON (w/ My Father’s Son)
July 27 – Holy Whale Brewery, Alma, NB
July 28 – Harmony Bazaar Festival of Women and Song, Lockeport, NS
July 29 – Trailside Cafe, Mount Stewart, PE (w/ Elise Besler)
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
I’m a PEI-based singer-songwriter, a mom of three, and an avid coffee drinker.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
My music is indie piano pop. As for writing, I am definitely a melody person — I love a catchy hook and a singalong chorus. I do the majority of my writing on the acoustic piano in my kitchen while sipping on an almond milk latte (and usually late at night once all my kids are asleep).
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
Yes! My band and I are in the middle of our Eastern Canadian Album Release Tour. We have a show this week in Toronto before we head back to the Maritimes for Harmony Bazaar Festival of Women and Song and a few other dates. My live show features a 4-piece band: piano, cello, bass, and drums (and vocals, of course). We try to bring lots of energy to the show and keep the downtempo songs to a minimum. I have a hard and fast rule about never playing two sad songs in a row.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
I would suggest my latest single, “Hearts On Fire.” We just released a new music video for it last week which features me and a couple of my buds jumping off a bridge into 4°C water and setting off fireworks on the beach at sunset. It was super fun to make!
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/artists?
Where to start? I love Hillsburn, Colleen Brown/Major Love, Milk and Bone, The Town Heroes and so, so many others! And a lot of my dearest friends are musicians based in the Maritimes: Catherine MacLellan, Tim Chaisson (The East Pointers), Adyn Townes, Ashley Condon — I could literally go on all day. I am so proud to be part of the incredible East Coast music community.
I’m Jenna, and I am the founder and editor of Canadian Beats. I have had a strong love for Canadian music, which started many years ago. I have a passion for promoting these talented Canadian bands and artists, and that’s how Canadian Beats came to be. I am so proud of what it has become over the last few years, with many talented music lovers and writers coming together to spread the word of Canada’s music.
