Singer/songwriter and rapper duo, CANELA, have just exclusively released their new fun and upbeat summer tune, “Rose Gold”, with us here at Canadian Beats. With lots of dancing and enough pink to make your heart melt, you’ll have this one on repeat for the warm summer months. There’s a little bit of everything in this song, from funk to hip hop to electro dance. We sat down with CANELA to learn a little more about this exciting new jam, so check it out.
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
We’re a singer/songwriter and rapper duo. Think G-Eazy and Halsey but a little more vibey and light-hearted. Usually Alex (A-Fos) produces the beats, I (Istiana) write the melodies and lyrics, he raps on it and then mixes and masters it.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
“Rose Gold” is a bit more of a summery popsicle. We wrote the song probably over 8 months ago and shot the music video ourselves more recently. We’re both videographers by day so this was all a DIY kind of thing and we’re super happy with it. We really wanted something cheeky and fun so there’s lots of pink velour and dancing!
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
We’re currently putting together our show right now for the fall! It’ll be something a little different with dancers and a couple feature guests. Alex is a performance coach training student musicians at Fanshawe College how to put on a good show. We want ours to be clean, well thought out, entertaining, and super engaging no matter the audience!
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
That’s a tough one because we both have a lot of different styles of songs out but I think ‘Rose Gold’ because it kind of encapsulates that. You can’t really put it into one box. It’s pop, it’s funky, it’s hip-hop, it’s electro dance.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
We work with a lot of great Canadian artists as videographers and we both grew up in college radio so we both love After Funk, Ivory Hours. I draw from Daniel Ceasar a bit and I think Shad and Classified have always been big ones for A-Fos.
Hi, I’m Chelsea, and I’m a writer and photographer based in Toronto, Ontario! I love all things music and have been writing about and taking pictures of concerts for five years. Concert photography is my favourite type of photography because you can capture some of the most raw moments of artists in the place they feel the most comfortable, no matter how big or small the show. As a music lover, I listen to any and all types of music, but my favourite has got to be indie rock.
