Today, Toronto based trio, Within release a video for their newest single, “Young”. This is the first single from the band’s upcoming EP to be released mid-May. The video is composed of original 70s-era 8mm footage. Judith (their singer/lyricist/pianist) sorted through hours of her partner’s family home videos to create this collage of memories. Check out the video below, and find out more about Within during our Five Questions With segment!

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

We are within. We write folk. Freak folk. Folk that’s a little freaky.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Our approach to music composition is collaborative. We generally start with something relatively simple and complicate it bit by bit as we search for alternatives to familiar song structures. Then it’s up to Judith’s lyrics to create the emotional anchor.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

We’ll be playing a show this summer at Toronto’s Evergreen Brick Works as part of a music series there. The date is TBD, so keep one eye on our social media for updates! Do what you will with the other eye. Our live show falls somewhere between a folk-rock concert and a chamber music performance.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

We’re gonna have to go with Young because it’s the only single we’ve released so far from our EP. It’s a song about disillusionment and vulnerability, and the video has been described as “cute and creepy.” We think we’ve found a good balance.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

The three of us have pretty different tastes in music, but here’s a grab bag selection: Big Brave, The Weather Station, Frog Eyes, Hexzuul, Jennifer Castle.
