Toronto based singer-songwriter, Ben Kunder will be releasing his new album, Better Human on June 29, 2018. He teamed up with producer/ engineer Aaron Goldstein and the recording features many names you will recognize such as Anthony Carone (Arkells), Anna Ruddick, Loel Campbell (Wintersleep), and more!

Today, we aid Ben in unveiling his newest single, “Fight For Time”. Ben’s vocals on this track are absolute perfection. I highly recommend you give the lyrics a listen, as it will likely resonate with many of us, struggling to find time to do the things that need to be done. With lyrics such as “I don’t want to fight for time with you, there’s never enough”, it certainly hits home in a world where jobs and other priorities tend to come in at first place over our personal lives.

During my research, I found a quote from John Gjaltema of AltCountry.NL about Ben’s previous album, Golden and it sums up my feelings of Ben’s voice, “Ben Kunder’s voice sounds like filtered sunbeams.”

Ben shares on the single,

“This song is literally about the struggle to find time for all of the things important in my life. I wrote this song with my friend and sometime collaborator, Maia Davies. We got together in the studio and she just started asking me questions about my day, about my kids, work as a carpenter, where I find time to work on my music and space to breathe. The words ‘I always gotta fight for time, time to be alone, time to be loved’ came out of my mouth and we went from there. Life is so busy and finding the time to put the energy you want to in all of the things that are important can sometimes seem impossible, and maybe it is. But love, love is all.”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi, I’m Ben Kunder.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I’ve been told that my music is a little tricky to fit into a box and I tend to think that’s a good thing. I write about my life, my family, life on the road and at home, the struggle to find time for all of the things you care about, my love. To me, the most important thing is the song. I start with that and everything else follows.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you describe your live performance?

I do have upcoming shows… but they haven’t been announced yet. To find out you need to follow me on social media platforms or on my website www.benkunder.com. I’ll be touring across Canada and Europe all within the next 6 months so come find me!

My live show is energetic and captivating. I sometimes feel like I’m the most alive when I’m on stage and I love to share my stories and energy. Connecting with an audience is what I do it all for.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

I’d say listen my new single, “Fight For Time”. It represents who I am right now, both in my personal life and musically. And it’s new! How exciting! Then listen to the rest of the new album when it comes out.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

I love The Weather Station, Bahamas new record is great. Megan Bonnell is a dream. Looking forward to hearing what Melissa Payne’s new music sounds like. Wintersleep is working on a new album too, Weaves is amazing. There’s so much incredible Canadian music right now and so many amazing artists that it’s impossible to narrow it down to only a few. It’s a beautiful time for music in Canada.
