Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
You can call me Krista Jane, KJ, Miss Jane (as my producer likes to call me) or Krista. I was born and raised in the nation’s capital – Ottawa! I grew up in a musical family, and therefore have been singing and performing since I was a child. I became a Chartered Professional Accountant along the way, but music and singing have always been my passion and I am excited to share my music with Canada and the rest of the world.
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
I’m all about real-life stories. Most of my songs stem from real emotions and situations that I’ve encountered in my life. I think it’s important to keep things real and honest if you want your music to resonate with your audience. I would describe my music genre to be urban pop – pop with an infusion of soul and R&B.
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
My next big show is my first solo show in Ottawa on June 28th. My main focus when I perform is to connect emotionally with my audience. If I am connected to what I’m singing, then my audience will feel it. I strongly believe that all audiences have this in common – they all want to walk out of a show feeling something and they are relying on me for that feeling. That means more emotion, more passion and more drama from my performance.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
It would definitely be “Can’t Let You Go”, on my EP to be released next month. I think that’s the song that demonstrates my vocal ability the best. I love singing ballads, so I’m biased in choosing that one. I think if you hear me sing a ballad, you’ll know right away that I’m in my zone. Those that know me know that that’s my thing. I also produced the piano piece in this song, which is another reason why it means so much to me.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?
Drake – I love all of his music because it’s very honest. Being in the public eye isn’t easy. It means you have to be vulnerable and he definitely portrays that in his music, making it so relatable. I think this is one of the many things that contributed to his worldwide success. I’m proud that he’s Canadian.
